He photographs professional child models in his studio along with detailed images of leaves, flowers, plants and animals. The pictures are then mixed and composed into Rousseau-like edenic settings using Photoshop.
Mixing truth and fiction, innocence and danger, van Empel’s work contains complex pictorial and political underpinnings while bursting with color.

"...a polka dot has the form of the sun, which is a symbol of the energy of the whole world and our living life, and also the form of the moon, which is calm. Round, soft, colorful, senseless and unknowing. Polka dots become movement... Polka dots are a way to infinity."
Yayoi maakte in de internationale kunstwereld furore met haar ruimtevullende installaties, waarin de bezoeker wordt omgeven door duizenden kleurrijke, kleine, opgevulde – vaak fallische – textiele objecten.
Infinity Mirror Room – Phalli’s Field (1965) is de eerste installatie waarin Yayoi Kusama gebruik maakt van spiegels; een materiaal dat zij haar leven lang zal blijven gebruiken en dat samen met haar zogenaamde ‘dots’ een essentieel aspect in Kusama’s oeuvre vormt. De ruimtevullende installaties van Kusama staan aan de basis van een inmiddels wijdverbreide traditie van ‘environments’ in de kunst.
